From Charlton Athletic FC to Mental Health Leadership: My Journey Beyond Football

For many young players, signing for a professional club like Charlton Athletic FC represents the dream. For me, it was no different. Football was more than a game, it was structure, identity, and purpose.

Being in a professional environment taught me discipline early. The expectations were high, the competition intense, and the margins for success incredibly small. Every training session mattered. Every decision mattered.

But what often goes unseen in professional football is the psychological pressure. Behind the performances are young people navigating identity, expectation, and uncertainty.

My time in football gave me more than technical ability, it gave me insight into people. I began to notice how players responded differently to pressure, how confidence could shift performance, and how support systems made all the difference.

That curiosity became a turning point.

Today, my work in mental health and wellbeing is deeply influenced by my experiences in football. I understand the mindset of young athletes, the pressures within academy systems, and the importance of emotional support alongside performance development.

Football gave me the foundation. Mental health gave me the purpose.
