Who Gets to Be Saved by Football?

Kevin George, BACP registered therapist and former professional footballer with West Ham United and Charlton Athletic, argues that football’s greatest contribution to working class Britain was never financial. It was a world that met the needs of anti social boys more effectively than schools, social care or therapy. He calls this the unintentional intention of football.

Through Winnicott’s idea of the holding environment, George explains why football reaches boys that traditional mental health provision cannot. He sets out six changes clubs, academies and policymakers can make to protect the game’s free routes in.
