Couple / Family Therapy: Where a child grows up shapes their mind. Home is the first place that counts.
Centre for Mental Health, 9 September 2026: research shows children's mental health is strongly shaped by where they grow up (source)
This month the Centre for Mental Health highlighted research showing that children's mental health is strongly shaped by where they grow up. Most of the discussion will focus on postcodes, housing and schools. Those factors are real. But before a child experiences their street, they experience their home.
The family is a system. When one part of it is under strain, every member feels it. A child's anxiety can be the loudest signal of tension that belongs to the whole household, including the relationship between the adults.
The team analogy
In football, a striker who stops scoring is rarely the whole problem. Look at the service from midfield, the shape of the team and the pressure from the bench. Family therapy works the same way. We look at the whole shape, not just the player who is struggling.
What couple and family therapy covers
Couple therapy helps partners repair communication, rebuild trust and manage conflict without damaging the people around them. Family therapy brings parents, children and sometimes wider family into the room to understand patterns that no single person can change alone.
As a Senior Family Therapist, I use systemic and attachment based approaches. The aim is not to find who is to blame. The aim is to change how the system works so everyone in it can breathe.
Frequently asked questions
Do all family members need to attend? Not always. We can start with the adults, with one parent, or with the whole family, depending on what will help most.
Is couple therapy only for couples who are staying together? No. It also supports separating parents who want to protect their children through the transition.
